Kirsch is currently representing Portage Mayor James Snyder and previously was part of the Sandi Jackson defense team
July 14, 2017-Thomas L. Kirsch of Schererville will be the new United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana if confirmed by the United States Senate. Senator Todd Young announced the selection today in a written release. “Tom has a great legal mind and is a fearless litigator who has shown a willingness to take on powerful interests,” Senator Young said. “I have no doubt he will continue the laudable work done by David Capp over the last decade.”
Kirsch is currently a partner with the Chicago firm Winston and Strawn. According to his profile on the firm’s website, Kirsch has received national recognition including being named to The National Law Journal’s 40 Under 40, a Rising Star by Law360 and a Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation. Kirsch was also named Litigator of the Week by The American Lawyer. Kirsch previously worked as an assistant united states attorney in the Northern District of Indiana from 2001-2008.
Kirsch currently represents Portage Mayor James Snyder in a criminal trial pending in the Northern District. The case likely will proceed as scheduled and an “ethical wall” will be constructed to avoid any appearance of conflict in the matter. An ethical wall prevents both the government and the client from benefiting or being prejudiced by the transition from private attorney to government attorney. In short, all information regarding the case will be segregated and handled by career staff attorneys. Kirsch was also a key member of the defense team of Sandi Jackson, wife of Jesse Jackson, Jr.
Winston and Strawn is the former firm of local power broker Dan Dumezich who most likely had a hand in the selection. Dumezich is the treasurer of the Indiana Republican Party and is a major republican campaign cash bundler.
