by Ken Davidson   La Caretta restaurant is open, for now. An attorney for La Caretta and El Rodeo Restaurants spoke to the Gazette today. Attorney Rafael Sanchez of Indianapolis told the Gazette that he had just received the Complaint filed by the State of Indiana today. “I have not even had time to review it” he told the Gazette. Prosecutors File Racketeering
Case Against La Caretta

by Ken Davidson   Prosecutors have filed a civil forfeiture case against a chain of restaurants that includes Merrillville’s popular La Caretta.  In a court filing in Lafayette on Friday Febraury 14, prosecutors allege filed a Complaint “FOR FORFEITURE AND TO ENJOIN RACKETEERING ACTIVITY and SUMMONS.”  The summons was issued on February 17, 2014 and it is not clear if it has been served yet.This action is the first step in a case to seize assets.  La Caretta is named along with numerious El Rodeo locations, several corporations which presumably serve as holding companies for the restaurant chain, and numerous …continue reading

Rollover on 80/94 Injures Merrillville Man


    Gary, Lake County-A Merrillville man was injured, early this morning, when he lost control of the car he was driving and rolled his vehicle over on I-80/94. Preliminary investigation revealed by Trooper Gary Runde revealed that at approximately 1:10 a.m., this Friday, February 14, 2014, morning a red 1993 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Michael L. Williams, Junior, 28 of Merrillville was east bound on I-80/94 (Borman Expressway) in lane two (right middle lane) out of four lanes at the 6.2 mile marker (just west of Burr Street exit ramp) when he lost control. INDOT Issues Weather Warning-12-24″ Possible

by Ken Davidson The Indiana Department of Transportation Northwest is issuing an advisory stating that Lake and Porter Counties can expect 12-24″ of snow, coming at a rate of up to 2″ per hour.  InDOT states:   Lake/Porter/LaPorte Counties: You are in the cross hairs. These lake effect snow bands will bring 6+ inches of snow in the next 24 hours. And, if the bands develop just right, this could actually drop as much as 2 FEET OF SNOW in that time. Several Roads Closed, Impassable Due to Blowing Winds, Ice and High Drifts

Several area roads have reportedly been closed. Trafficwise reports that: UPDATE from Indiana State Police : 9:45 p.m. Update:  80/94 is closed from Illinois State Line to US 421 in Michigan City.  I-65 is Closed from US 30 to Lafayette.  Cline Avenue, Rte 912 remains closed. IN 912 eastbound: Road closed. between US 41 (Hammond) and Inland Steel Overpass (East Chicago). The road is closed. See map for detour(s). Semi Fire Closes I-65 at 61st Avenue For Two Hours

Gary, Lake County-An early morning crash involving three semis this New Year’s Eve morning has closed all lanes of I-65 northbound just before Ridge Road when one of the semis caught fire. All lanes north bound at the above location are closed due to a semi loaded with clothing that has caught fire. All traffic is being diverted off at US 30 and 61st Avenue.
