Recorded phone call has Council President Ron Brewer holding a 14 year old at gunpoint screaming “Where’s my shit, where’s my shit” while victim pleads for Brewer to “take him to his mama.”
November 7, 2019-Gary Commmon Council President Ron Brewer has been charged with kidnapping, a level 5 felony, criminal confinement, a level 5 felony, and intimidation, a level 6 felony in Lake Superior Court. Court records indicate that a warrant was issued for the arrest of Brewer. It is unclear if that warrant is still active, but a Gary Common Council meeting scheduled for tonight was cancelled without notice.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on September 22, 2019 at approximately 7:12 p.m. Police allege that Brewer and his wife Nicole Mabon-Brewer travelled to East Chicago after learning that a car which had been stolen the day before in Gary may be located in the City. During the course of the incident, Police allege that Brewer shot at the Lexus, shot at the teens who fled from the Lexus and captured one of the teens and forced him into their car at gunpoint. Brewer screamed obscenities and repeatedly threatened to shoot the teen according to Police. “You don’t know how bad I want to blow your shit back” Brewer allegedly screamed as he held a gun on the 14 year old boy.
Brewer repeatedly demanded that the captured teen return his “shit” or tell him where his “shit” was during the course of the incident. Brewer stated “All of my stuff better come out or I’m gonna blast your ass” Brewer reportedly stated as he forced the teen into the car at gunpoint according to Victim 1.
The 14 year old victim stated that he was playing basketball when a friend offered him a ride. As they were riding, they noticed a black SUV following them. At some point, a thin, bald man (believed to be Ronald Brewer) could be seen leaning out of the SUV firing a gun at the vehicle according to the victim. The teens abandoned the car and heard 3 or 4 more shots fired at them.
Much of the conversation in the car between East Chicago and Gary was captured on tape by dispatch and demonstrates that the teen pleaded for Brewer to “take him to his mama” indicating his Mother would clarify that he did not steal the car. According to Dispatch Brewer states that he “ain’t goin’ nowhere with your god damn mouth” and makes reference to a “body bag.” Brewer then states “fuck with my shit” according to the Probable Cause Affidavit filed in Court. Brewer did not respond to repeated questions by dispatch and may not have known he was still connected to the 9-1-1 call center.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. Gary Police located the stolen vehicle parked in the driveway of the Brewer home in Gary. As an officer got out of his vehicle to approach the Lexus sedan, the sedan began to leave the driveway according to the report. Officers then activated their emergency lights and stopped the vehicle near 20th Place and Taft Street. When the officer asked Brewer about the bullet hole in the Lexus, Brewer responded “Yes that’s new, someone must have been after them while they had my car” according to the sworn statement. No further statements by Brewer were included in the Affidavit. Brewer has since hired Attorney Scott King and the Gazette does not have a statement from Mr. King regarding the incident.
Police have obtained multiple video clips of the incident including one which may have audio of gunshots allegedly fired by Brewer. In addition to the teens in the car, Police say that the gunfire caused several patrons at an East Chicago gas station to run in fear as well.
