February 7, 2019-Hammond Police say a routine encounter with a resident ended in a fatal crash early yesterday evening. According to the report from Lt. Steven Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, a Hammond Police Officer was on routine patrol in the 6400 block of Calumet Avenue at approximately 6:40 p.m. yesterday when he noticed a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo parked at a gas station. “The officer recognized the vehicle from a previous call in which the driver fled from police in that vehicle.” Police say that the officer knew the driver of the vehicle had an active arrest warrant. “The officer attempted to approach the operator to speak with him as he exited the store towards his vehicle. The man quickly walked towards his car, got inside, and locked the door” Lt. Kellogg reported.

Lt. Kellogg says the driver then fled the gas station by putting the black Monte Carlo in reverse. The vehicle travelled south on Calumet to 165th Street where the driver headed west. ” The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle but lost sight of the vehicle as it was too far ahead of him and had turned” the report continues. The officer continued westbound on 165th when he “saw a cloud of smoke and the vehicle had flipped over” according to police.

Police say the driver had been ejected from the vehicle. EMS personnel were summmond and “Hammond FD declared that the subject was deceased” according to Lt. Kellogg. Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey has identified the decedant as 25 year old Antonio Short of the 1000 block of Highland Street, Hammond. The cause and manner of death are pending. Indiana State Police were summoned to assist in the investigation of the accident but have not yet released a report on the incident.

Court records show that 25 year old Antonio Short has only one prior misdemeanor charge. In January, 2018, Short was charged with resisting law enforcement. Short pled guilty to resisting law enforcement in March, 2018. On May 16, 2018 Short failed to appear at a scheduled hearing and a warrant was issued. Short was arrested on that warrant on May 22, 2018 according to the online docket system. In July 2018 Short appeared in Court. In August, 2018 Short again failed to appear in Court and Judge Sheila Moss entered a warrant for his arrest.

  1. Hammond needs to start issuing tickets for a new court date in some of these misdemeanor cases. The 25 year old man lost his life way to early even though he had a warrant. To me life is more important than locking up another person and possibly making them loose their job and what not. Just sad.
