January 30, 2019-The Gazette has been able to obtain details contained in the police report that led to the arrest of former Lake County Councilman Jamal Washington. According to the report. Gary Council Member LaVetta Sparks-Wade telephoned a friend this morning and informed him that Washington had battered her, taken her phone and prevented her from leaving her home during the evening hours of January 29. Based on the report from the friend, police responded to Sparks-Wade’s home with a SWAT unit and several senior Gary Police officials at approximately 7:50 a.m. today. According to the report, Sparks-Wade had a swollen lip when police arrived. This comports with the statement of Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez who stated that there were “signs of injury.”
In two prior cases, the victims alleged that Washington restrained them from leaving and took their cell phones. Washington defended that the similarities were due to the highly publicized nature of his cases-that the victim in the second case took the details alleged in the first case and repeated them to police.
No charges have been filed in the case. An arrest is not evidence of guilt.
