Lake County SWAT Team reportedly dispatched to Glen Park residence after report of domestic dispute.
UPDATE: As of 6:30 p.m. no charges have been filed in the case.
UPDATE: Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez states “there were signs of injury to Gary Council Member LaVetta Sparks-Wade” when officers arrived. Based on this, former Lake County Councilman Jamal Washington was taken into custoday and the case is being handled by the Gary Police Department.
January 30, 2019-The Lake County SWAT Team was reportedly dispatched to the Glen Park residence of former Lake County Councilman Jamal Washington this morning for a call of a domestic situation. In addition to being a former Lake County Councilman, Washington is currently running for a position on the Gary City Council.
Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez has not returned calls for comment but information obtained via the scanner indicates that several high ranking Gary Police Officers and the Lake County SWAT Team were dispatched to a home in the 3900 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive at approximately 7:50 a.m. for a report of a domestic incident.
A source close to the investigation confirmed that several high ranking officers were summoned to the scene based on the address of the call. “They must have realized who it was” the source stated.
Washington was charged with strangulationa and domestic battery resulting in bodily injury in 2015. That case was charged as a level 6 felony and reduced to a misdemeanor during plea negotiations. The 2015 case involved his ex-wife who has been a supporter of Washington’s political ambitions since that time.
In December 2017, one day before his probation was over on the 2015 case, Washington was arrested and charged with three counts of felony criminal confinement and battery as a result of an incident involving a cousin who resided in his home. Washington faced up to 16 years in prison on the felony charges. That case went to trial and Washington was convicted of misdemeanor battery and again received probation.
Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez did not return calls for comment regarding this incident. This report will be updated if charges are filed.
