Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Heated Argument Leads to Shootout on Rte 30 in Merrillville

December 20, 2018-Police say what began as a heated argument escalated into a shootout in which innocent people could have been shot. According to court documents, Trey D. Kelly age 25 of Merrillville, is still at large after being charged with attempted murder, attempted battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness. The sworn probable cause affidavit filed in the case states that Kelly and another man got into a “heated argument” at a home in the 1600 block of E. 87th Court on October 16, 2018. “. . . Kelly returned driving at high rate of speed, stopped in front of the aboveresidence, exited his car with handgun displayed, walked onto the lawn of the residence, and beganshooting at the residence” the affidavit continues.

A man who was at the residence, Tyre Wren, left the house and later saw Kelly at the intersection of US 30 and Mississippi Street. Wren and Kelly “exchanged gunfire in the heavily populated area.” The pair travelled north on Mississipi Street exchanging gunfire according to the sworn statement. Wren crashed his vehicle near 61st and Mississippi where he fled into a nearby motel. Police say that Wren hid his gun in the bushes near the hotel. Police were able to recover multiple shell casings and documented bullet holes to the vehicle Wren was driving. “tnside Wrenn’s vehicle officers located several spent .40 caliber shell casings. an empty .45 caliber

No charges have been filed against Wren at this point in time.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. A criminal charge is not evidence of guilt.
