Minnesota Man Charged with Kidnapping in Federal Court

According to US Attorney Kirsch, a victim in Lafayette, IN was “was kidnapped against her will and under threat of death or serious bodily injury, held for ransom, and transported to Illinois by individuals including Randy Smith” on December 5, 2018

December 6, 2018-A Lafayette woman was rescued after a multi-state law enforcement effort resulted in the apprehension of an alleged kidnapper yesterday according to United States Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch.  Kirsch credited “the responsiveness of our law enforcement partners to investigate violent crime” for the expedited filing of charges in the case.

According to the statement the kidnapping occurred in Lafayette, Indiana in the morning hours on December 5, 2018.  The unidentified woman was “was kidnapped against her will and under threat of death or serious bodily injury, held for ransom.”  In the evening hours of December 5, Illinois police located a vehicle “containing the victim and [Randy] Smith.”  Randy Smith, 24, recently of Golden Valley, Minnesota, was taken into custody and charged in a criminal complaint with interstate kidnapping according to United States Attorney Kirsch.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.  A criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt.
