Gary Firefighters Find Body of Lake Station Man After Fighting Dual Fires

Gary Firefighters responded to calls for a brush fire and a structure fire in the 8900 block of Melton Road at approximately 9:00 a.m. today

December 2, 2018-Gary Firefighters responded to two calls for service at approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning. The first call was a brush fire in the 500 block of Vigo Place. At approximately the same time, firefighters were called to 9148 Melton Road for a structure fire. Firefighters requested traffic control from Gary Police in order to close down Melton Road.

Firefighters reported that a “large storage facility” appeared to be contained at approximately 9:05 a.m. Firefighters were able to strike the fire and began searching the area to ensure it was completely extinguished. During the search of the area, firefighters discovered a body in the storage facility.

Gary Police and Lake County Coroner were called to the scene. Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey has identified the deceased as 55 year old Ronald Thomas of the 2700 block of Warren Street in Lake Station. The manner and cause of death are pending.
