Gary Man Gets 105 Months in Fed Prison for Munster Armed Robbery

According to report at the time, 4 suspects fled after robbing Munster Verizon Store and one was shot by Gary Police

September 20, 2018-US Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch announced that a Gary man was sentenced to 105 months in prison after pleading guilty to federal Hobbs Act Robbery and brandishing a firearm during the course of a robbery. Vondell Henry Jr., 21 years old, of Gary, Indiana, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Joseph VanBokkelen on his plea of guilty. US Attorney Kirsch stated “according to documents in the case, on August 1, 2017, Henry and three others, including his co-defendant Deshalone Davis, robbed a wireless cell phone store located at Ridge Road and Calumet Avenue in Munster, Indiana. Two of the robbers brandished guns during the robbery, which took place around 5:00pm when customers and employees were inside the store. Henry drove the vehicle to the store, remained in the vehicle while the others went inside, and acted as the getaway driver.”

According to Gazette reporting on August 1, 2017, A police chase that began in Munster ended with a Gary police officer shooting a suspect. According to a report from Mark Back of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began when 5 individuals attempted an armed robbery at a Verizon store in Munster. Although not stated in the press release, witnesses reported that the Verizon store, pictured above, was located at 822 Ridge Road, Munster. Munster officers pursued the suspects through Highland and Griffith and into Gary. Officers were joined by other agencies including Highland, Munster, Gary, Lake County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, and Indiana State Police according to the statement.

The suspect vehicle ran off the roadway near 19th and Hanley in Gary, Indiana and the suspects fled on foot. Officers quickly set up a perimeter and began searching the area. One suspect was shot by police and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Three additional suspects were taken into custody and one is still at large according to Back. Witnesses in the area reported hearing multiple shots fired in the area. It is not known at this point if the suspect fired his weapon but weapons were recovered on scene according to Back. Back says police are still working to identify the suspects. The identity of the police officer will be released during the course of the investigation.
