July 24, 2018-Indiana Department of Natural Resource Officers confirmed this morning that a search is underway for a missing Merrillville woman at Gary’s Miller Beach. According to the statement from DNR Officials, the search began last night at approximately 7:45 p.m. after authorities were alerted that a woman was missing in the water. According to the statement, ” Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the disappearance of Tiara Harvey, age 24, of Merrillville, Indiana, after she was last seen struggling in the waters of Lake Michigan off the shore of Miller Beach.” Authorities say that Tiara was swimming with two other friends when the high waves and strong currents caused them to attempt to return to shore. A good samaritan was able to help two of the friends return to shore but Tiara Harvey was seen “go under and not return to the surface” according to the report.
An initial search was conducted by the Lake County Marine Unit, Lake County Aviation Unit, United States Coast Guard, and Gary Police and Fire departments. A diver from the Gary Fire Department also entered the water to conduct a search. Due to darkness, and dangerous wave and rip current activity, the search was postponed until this morning.
Search efforts were resumed this morning with shore-based searches by Indiana Conservation Officers, Gary Police Department, and Gary Fire. A search of the area by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was also conducted. A water-based search is being performed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Indiana Conservation Officers will be attempting to use side scan sonar technology to search the area by boat today.
