Victim Warns Public Regarding Brazen Attempted Carjacking in Hammond

Hammond Police have confirmed a male approached a 60 year old Hessville resident in broad daylight, pointed a firearm and demanded her car keys.

July 23, 2018-A Hammond man is warning other residents to be aware of their surroundings after his wife was the victim of an attempted carjacking yesterday just after noon. Hammond Police Lt. Steven Kellogg confirmed that officers responded to the 6700 block of Alabama Street at approximately 12:35p.m. on July 22 in reference to an armed robbery. According to the report from Lt. Kellogg, “Upon arrival Officers came into contact with the 60-year-old female victim. She stated she pulled into her driveway when a black vehicle with tinted windows stopped in the street in front of her driveway. She stated a male exited the passenger side of the vehicle and began walking up her driveway. The victim stated the suspect had a black in color semi-automatic handgun, pointed the weapon at her and stated he wanted her car keys.” The victim threw her keys in the backyard and began screaming for someone to call the police according to the statement. The suspect then got into the black vehicle and fled.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5’08”, thin build, clean shaven, with a short afro type hair style, wearing a green hooded sweater. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Sergeant John Suarez at (219) 852-2981.
