Porter County Coroner Confirms 37 Y.O. Man Dies in Fireworks Accident

July 7, 2018-A celebration of the independence of our country turned deadly tonight after a Porter County man was struck with a mortar designed to launch fireworks in the air. According to a release from Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris, coroner investigators were called to the 600 block of Persimmon Parkway in Hebron at 6:47 p.m. tonight for an apparent fireworks accident. “The incident resulted in one person’s death and a second individual was flown to a Chicago hospital” according to the report. 37 year old Scott McKee of Hebron was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the statement, McKee “had set off a 3″ mortar tube when it prematurely went off. The mortar struck Mr. Mckee in the head” according to the report. Neither the identity nor the condition of the airlifted man was known at the time of this report. The investigation is ongoing according to Coroner Harris.

Public safety officials remind residents that fireworks should be used safely. Indiana law provides that fireworks may not be used after 11:00 p.m. Local law may provide stricter guidelines.
