April 5, 2018-Former Habitat ReStore Manager Lauren Igartua adopted her family pet, Freckles, at last year’s Adopt-a-Pet Event at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Freckles is a blue heeler who is nearly two years old.

“I remember that day,” said Igartua. “I was holding the door open for all the rescues to come in and get settled at their tables and a little blue heeler walked through the door. She was so excited to see where she was going and what was going on.”

Igartua loves all dogs, but one of her favorite dog breeds is a blue heeler. When she first saw Freckles, it was love at first tail wag.

“She was smiling and just had a positive energy, but she was a little nervous with all the commotion. Once I saw her good nature, I knew that if I didn’t rescue her now, I would regret this,” said Igartua. “She was a perfect fit for me. She was everything I wanted from a dog and I was determined to make this work.”

Igartua’s family knew how much she wanted Freckles so they helped dog-sit while she was at work. Freckles did not trust many people at first because she was abused and neglected before being rescued.

“It is insane how someone could treat an animal so poorly that the animal reacts in that manner,” said Igartua. “After the constant love and attention myself and my family have given her, she broke all those habitats and is a completely different dog. It’s crazy how far she has come. She’s 100% happy now and with no worries.”

Igartua joined the ReStore family in 2014 where she started off as a cashier but shortly after was promoted to store manager. She first heard about the ReStore from a friend who worked there.

“I love what the organization does and what it stands for and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Igartua.

When the ReStore hosted it’s fifth annual Adopt-a-Pet Event in 2017, Igartua helped by reaching out to different rescues and sponsors to see who would be interested in attending or donating to the event.

Igartua said last years event turned out great and hopes the same for future events.

“We had a great turn out,” said Igartua. “The public loved the event and they got to see different, unique and cute animals.”

Igartua is no longer at the Merrillville ReStore since leaving the state but she will always have a beautiful reminder from working there.

This year’s event will be held at both ReStore locations in Griffith and Merrillville on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. If you would like to donate items, stop by the store or call 219-972-3000. Visit the ReStores at for any other questions.
