“Trooper Burkey was not seriously injured and sought precautionary medical attention. He was released soon after.”-Indiana State Police report
March 20, 2018-Indiana State Police say that “an 18 year old man from Wolcottville was arrested early this morning after he struck an Indiana State Police car on US 20 in LaGrange County and was found to be intoxicated at the time.” According to the report. Indiana State Trooper Daniel Burkey observed a 2008 Infiniti driving erratically on US 20 at approximately 12:15 a.m. today. Trooper Burkey activated his lights and turned around to curb the Infiniti. According to the report, the Infiniti continued to travel eastbound on US 20.
“When Burkey crested the hill just west of County Road 200 E, he saw the Infiniti straddling the center line. As Burkey got closer, he saw the Infiniti backing up down the middle of the road, at which point, he steered to his left to avoid a collision. The driver, 18 year old Austin J. McKnight turned in the same direction and struck the right, front portion of Burkey’s 2011 Dodge Charger.”
McKnight, the driver of the Infiniti, was taken to the hospital where his blood alcohol registered nearly 3 times the legal limit according to police. McKnight was treated and released to the custody of the LaGrange County Sheriff Department.
Trooper Burkey was not seriously injured and sought precautionary medical attention. He was released soon after.
McKnight was taken to and incarcerated in the LaGrange County Jail on the following preliminary charges:
- Operating While Intoxicated, Greater than .15% BAC
- Operating While Intoxicated, Aggressive Driving
- Reckless Driving
- Minor in Possession of Alcohol
All Suspects are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty in a Court of Law
