Hammond Teen CEO Wins Young Entrepreneur of the Year

Shamari Walker of Ascunia Tech is a 17 year old Gavit Student who beat out multiple older entrants for the $5,000 prize from Blue1647 and WDB Marketing

February 26, 2018-If you listen to Afternoon Fix on WJOB, you probably have already heard of Shamari Walker.  After school the teen wonderkid comes to the studio to work in his office located in the Purdue Commercialization and Excellence Center.  Last Weekend, Walker was honored as Young Entrepreneur of the Year by WDB Marketing and Blue 1647.  Walker was selected from a group of submissions from the entire Chicago area.  The finalists included a clothing designer and a retail startup.   Walker is the CEO of Ascunia Tech, a web design and marketing company.  Among the projects Walker has completed is the “Hey Jed” app for WJOB.

Walker says he believes he beat out the others because he was a sel-starte and self-funded.  “I started my company with birthday and Christmas money”  Walker stated.  Walker said he gave a two minute pitch regarding Ascunia Tech.  “I started everything on my own, I am still in high school”  Walker stated when asked what set him apart from the others.  “I invested $250.00”  in November, 2015 Walker explained.  The company has grown and now has clients across the country.

Last year Shamari was invited to be a featured speaker at Technori Tech Showcase in Chicago.

Walker’s advice to other entrepreneurs shows that he is not only smart but wise beyond his 17 years:   “It is going to be difficult at first and people are going to doubt you, but you have to put in the effort and I promise you it will be worth it in the end.  Whenever you feel like giving up, just remember why you started in the first place.”
