Two Killed Standing Outside Their Car After Crashing

Police are asking assistance for anyone who may have information on the driver of the VW or his vehicle, described and evidence left at the scene, as a black Volkswagen four door, possibly a Passat.  It has heavy front end damage.  Please contact Detective Gary Runde at 219-696-6242. February 24, 2018-A multi-vehicle crash resulted in two deaths on Interstate 80/94 in Gary early today according to reports from the Indiana State Police and Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey.  The pair were standing outside their vehicles after the crash which occurred at approximately 4:13 am according to Indiana State Police.  The incident began when “a 2002 Ford Explorer occupied by three people were east bound on I-80/94 when it sideswiped a semi-trailer. ”  The Explorer flipped onto its roof and came to rest in the roadway.  The passengers climbed out of the vehicle.

The ” Explorer was hit by a black Volkswagen (VW) four door The VW, after hitting the Explorer, went off on the inner shoulder where it struck a 2004 Honda Pilot, driven by Ryan J. Vlasic, 37 of Madison, Alabama. ”  Vlasic had stopped at the scene to assist according to the report.  “The driver of the VW, described as a black male, got out of the VW and then immediately got back into the car and took off east bound” the report continues.

Police believe a vehicle slammed on its brakes to avoid becoming involved in the now three car collission when a Hyundai Santa Fe ” swerved to the right and hit something.”  Police believe the Santa Fe hit one of the occupants that was standing outside of the Explorer.  “It is not known at this time definitely which vehicle hit the second occupant [of the Explorer].”  Two male occupants of the Explorer were pronounced dead at the scene.  Another passenger from the Explorer as well as the driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe were taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake with non-life threatening injuries according to Police.  Names of the deceased are Nathaniel McIntee (brother of the passenger), 31 of Merrillville, Indiana and Jason Howard (nephew of the passenger), 34 of Fairmont, West Virginia.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.  A criminal charge is not evidence of guilt.
