Griffith Student Arrested After Carrying Gun Into School

February 21, 2018-A Griffith High School senior was arrested today after he approached a resource officer and admitted that he had brought a gun to school. According to a statement from the Griffith Police Department, an 18 year old male student approached a school resource officer and “stated that he had mistakenly brought the loaded gun to school.” The student had a valid permit to carry a gun and asked the resource officer if he could put the handgun in his vehicle. “The School Resource Officer then took possession of the .380 caliber Glock Model 42 and took the student into custody without incident. The firearm was not brandished or used in any illegal way other than its mere possession by the student on school property, and the student was cooperative throughout the entire incident” the report continues.

The student was transported to the Lake County Jail pending charges of Possession of a Handgun on School Property, a level 6 Felony.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Neither an arrest nor a criminal charge is evidence of guilt.
