January 24, 2018-Indiana State Police say a Whiting man was hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash on the Calumet Avenue Ramp of I-80/94. According to a statement, “at approximately 6:40 a.m., this morning, a 2006 Ford van, driven by Eric Anthony, 47 of Whiting, was on the ramp from south bound Calumet Avenue to east bound I-80/94 when he lost control on the icy ramp. The van went off the road and hit the barrier wall on the inside, and came to controlled rest on the outside shoulder.”
Shortly thereafter, a 2013 Ford Focus, driven by Michael Daniel, 25 of Griffith, also lost control on the icy ramp and his Focus hit the rear of the Ford van. Anthony, after crashing, had gotten out of his Ford van and went behind his vehicle when Daniel hit the rear. Anthony was pinned between the two vehicles.
A 2004 Jeep Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), driven by Esmeralda Ruiz, 20 of Griffith, also lost control on the ramp and hit the Focus.
Anthony was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with serious leg injuries and was later transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Daniel was taken to Munster Community Hospital with complaint of pain. Ruiz was not injured.
The ramp was closed for several hours for reconstruction, removal of the injured and cars, and salting of the ramp. The Indiana State Police would like to remind the motoring public to remain in your car after crashing or becoming disabled. The safest place is inside your vehicle!
