Hammond Police Make Arrest in Jan. 6 Homicide

January 9, 2018-Just three days after a man was found shot to death in an alley across from Morton High School, police have tracked down and arrested a suspect. According to Lt. Steven Kellogg, Hammond Police were assisted by FBI Agents, Indiana State Police and other local law enforcement agencies in identifying and apprehending an 18 year old Hammond Man. The suspect fled to Goodland, Indiana where he was located and taken into custody without incident according to the statement. Murder charges are expected to be filed later this week.

The arrest comes after police were called to the alley in the 6700 block of New Jersey on January 6, 2018. Upon arrival, officers found 20 year old Shermane Sargent of the 100 block of 157th St. in Calumet City IL. Sargent suffered a single gunshot wound. Sargent was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
