January 2, 2018-Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. will take another step in utilizing technology to reach constituents. The City of Hammond has been at the forefront of delivering information directly to residents for years. GoHammond.tv broadcasts all relevant City meetings for residents to view. In addition to the GoHammond.tv page, the Mayor does a weekly radio show every Friday on WJOB 1230 AM/104.7 FM. During the show the Mayor fields questions and concerns from residents and often resolves issues right on the air. Additionally the Mayor hosts monthly Mayor’s Night Out meetings throughout the City.
Mayor McDermott has been hailed and villified for his frequent use of social media. Most recently, the Mayor created a social media platform for his dog Teddy who the Mayor says needs CBD Oil on a daily basis. The innovative and entertaining site has prompted legislation for the upcoming session.
Now the Mayor will take to social media to communicate in real time with Hammond residents. Ken Hochstetler, adminstrator of the What’s Going on in Hammond Facebook Group explained “I reached out to the Mayor some time ago to see if he’d be interested in joining our group to have that quick and easy connection with our members . . .He got back to me and in talking with him we thought we could test a forum like this.” Mayor McDermott says it could be a regular thing if it works out well. Viewers of the Facebook forum will be able to ask questions in real time and the Mayor will address as many as he can.
