Griffith, IN, December 7, 2017-Griffith Police say a suspect is in custody after an attempted robbery at 7-11, 415 W. Glen Park, and a theft from a vehicle that happened earlier in the evening on December 6. “Griffith Police responded to the 7-11 shortly after 10:00PM in response to the report of an attempted armed robbery. The suspect had entered the 7-11 and loitered around for several minutes as other customers were inside. Once the customers left, the suspect approached the clerk, reached in his jacket pocket, and pointed it at the clerk as if he had a weapon, and demanded money from the register. The clerk refused and the suspect then fled on foot.”
The suspect description had been given to area officers immediately upon police arrival to the scene. The suspect matching that description was located shortly thereafter by a Highland Police officer in front of the nearby Anytime Fitness located at 9632 Cline Ave in Highland. The suspect, a 27 year old Highland, Indiana man, was positively identified by the 7-11 employee and then transported to the Griffith Police Department for further investigation.
Earlier in the day, at approx 5:00PM, police responded to the Family Express to what was initially reported as an attempted Carjacking. However, further investigation revealed that no Carjacking had taken place, but rather a suspect had confronted a victim in a parked vehicle and ultimately stole her purse before fleeing the scene. Further details are being withheld at this time in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
Information obtained by the police, lead investigators to strongly believe that the two incidents may be related. The incidents are still under active investigation and any applicable charges are expected to be sought with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, December 8, 2017.
