December 5, 2017-Sheriff Oscar Martinez says that the increase in drug deaths in Lake County is alarming. “In Lake County as of Friday December 01, 2017, there have been 141 confirmed deaths related to drug overdose this year.
Heroin was responsible for 33 with 13 of those mixed with fentanyl, Straight Fentanyl claimed 43 lives, cocaine 9, and 56 lives lost through a mixture of all other controlled substance. In all of 2016 there were 114 lives lost due to this drug epidemic, so the increase in deaths is alarming” Sheriff Martinez stated.
In order to combat this epidemic, the Lake County Drug Task Force has been deployed to actively pursue drug activity.
On 11-28-17 As a result of a narcotic investigation, the Lake County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force conducted a search warrant in the midtown section of Gary which resulted in the arrest of Jason Hopkins age 32 of Gary, Indiana. Charges of possession of cocaine and distribution of heroin were filed with the Lake County Prosecutors Office.
On 12-04-17 The Lake County Sheriff’s Drug Taskforce investigated an active marijuana growing operation in the Tiberon Trails apartment complex. Detectives confiscated and disassembled the operation, and charges filed with Prosecutors office.
On 12-05-17 As a result of a narcotic investigation, the Lake County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force conducted a search warrant in the 1300 block of Delaware St. in Gary. Evidence related to heroin distribution was seized, this investigation is still active, and charges are pending.
