Hessville Woman Shot by Intruder “Who Was Known to Her”

November 7, 2017-Hammond Police are describing a shooting which occurred yesterday in the 6500 block of Tennessee as a domestic incident.  According to Lt. Kellogg, “On 11/6, Hammond police responded at approximately 7:40 a.m. to a home in the 6500 block of Tennessee Avenue for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a female who was shot in the leg.” Officers say the woman was awakened to someone trying to kick in her door. “The victim, who owns a firearm, took her gun to the front door and encountered a man known to her. The two argued, and the man left. As the man ran back to a car, he turned and fired a gun back at the woman, striking her in the leg.” Neighbors in the area took to social media to report hearing shots fired early yesterday morning. Police say charges are expected against the male involved but have not identified him at this point. “The man has been identified, but is not in custody at this time. Charges are expected against him” Lt. Kellogg stated.

Hammond Police believe the shooting is an isolated case as all parties are known to each other. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Sgt. Nicole Duncanson at 219-852-2968.
