October 2, 2017-Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo has confirmed that a mass shooting occurred in Las Vegas last night leaving 50 dead and 200 wounded. According to Sheriff Lombardo, “we experienced an active shooter situation at approximately 10:08 p.m. [October 1, 2017]. . . .we had calls come into dispatch of multiple shots being fired from the direction of Mandalay Bay toward the direction of the Route 91 concert that was taking place on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Through investigation and response, we determined that there was an active shooter on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay. Officers responded at that location and engaged the suspect. He is dead. He has been identified, he is a local resident, I will not release his name at this time. . . .right now we believe it was a sole actor . . .”
As the tragic event unfolded, Sheriff Lombardo updated the death toll via social media. At approximately 5:30 a.m. this morning, the following Tweet was posted:
At this time there is in excess of 50 deceased and over 200 injured individuals.

Sheriff Lombardo confirmed that two on duty police officers were injured, one critically. Additionally he stated that he believed there were off-duty police officers at the concert who were shot, some fatally.
Police later identified the shooter as 63 year old Stephen Paddock of Las Vegas, pictured below in a photo that was taken from his Twitter account and is being used by news media worldwide:
