Hazardous Semi Fire Shuts Down I-80/94 Near SR 249 Portage

September 28, 2017-Traffic in both directions of I-80/94 is shut down this morning at the in Portage as crews battle a fire involving a semi loaded with hazardous, corrosive material. According to a release from the Indiana State Police, A semi pulling a box van loaded with placarded Hazardous Material Corrosives caught fire and has shut down traffic in both directions of I-80/94 just east of State Road 249 (Portage exit).

All traffic is being diverted off east bound at Ripley Street and west bound traffic is being diverted off at State Road 49 (Chesterton exit). No traffic is being allowed on State Road 249 to enter or exit the interstate from there. Police say, this corrosive has a 1/2 mile evacuation radius in all directions. Businesses that are north of the fire in the Ameriplex Industrial Center are being notified and evacuated if needed. Portage Police Department, numerous fire departments, and proper agencies have been notified.
