LaPorte Man Charged with Attempted Placement of an Explosive Device

September 22, 2017-LaPorte Police say they found “An item of destruction and/ or explosive device” in a residence in the 700 block of F Street on Wednesday. Police say they obtained information regarding a possible explosive device at 4:00 p.m. on September 21. “Based upon information gathered during further investigation, LaPorte Police Detectives were able to secure a search warrant for the residence through the LaPorte County Prosecutors Office and La Porte County Circuit Court. Officers and Detectives from the LaPorte Police Dept. and the La Porte County Emergency Response Team (ERT), ascended on the residence making contact with resident, Eric R. Weiler, age 44, who was taken into custody without incident” according to a statement. Porter County Bomb Squad was then called to assist. “An item of destruction and/ or explosive device was located, secured and later disposed of by the bomb squad. The residence is still under the control of the LaPorte Police Dept. reference further investigation into the matter.”

44 year old Eric R. Weiler was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and charged with Attempted Placement of a Destructive Device or Explosive – Level 2 Felony. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.
