Nearby Maywood School briefly put on alert due to shooting in the area
September 22, 2017-A Hammond man shot and killed a home invasion intruder this morning according to Lt. Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department. Lt. Kellogg says Police were called to the 6400 block of Woodward Avenue at approximately 7:30 a.m. in reference to a shooting. ” Upon arrival, officers found a deceased black male inside of the residence. According to witnesses, the suspect entered the home this morning and announced to the occupants
that he was going to rob them and threatened them with a firearm. The robbery suspect forced the occupants into the basement of the home. One additional occupant of the home was not seen by the robbery suspect. This male retrieved a handgun that he keeps for self-defense and when the robbery suspect exited the basement and stepped into the kitchen, the occupant of the home shot the robbery suspect multiple times in the chest. The robbery suspect died at the scene.”
Lt. Kellogg states that Hammond Police contacted nearby Maywood School to advise them to keep the children inside as they conucted their investigation.
Lt. Kellogg states the homeowner exited the home and told police what happened when they arrived. The identity of the suspect is pending a release from the Lake County Coroner’s office. The other parties will be identified as soon as the investigation allows according to Lt. Kellogg.
