September 7, 2017-Hammond officials are on high alert today after learning that a pipe bomb which exploded in the East Chicago Post Offfice yesterday was addressed to a Hammond Official. East Chicago Police were called to the Post office located at the intersection of Kennedy and Chicago Avenue at approximately 6:00 p.m. last night. One employee was injured when one of two pipe bombs found exploded according to information obtained via the scanner. East Chicago police, EMS and Fire responded and cordoned off the area while a thorough search was conducted.
Today the Gazette learned that all Hammond City Officials have been warned that the intended target was a Hammond City Official. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the individual involved in the investigation told us that “everyone was warned, we are on high alert.”. According to the source, a package containing at least one pipe bomb was addressed to the home of a Hammond City Official. “Obviously it is someone who has a dispute with the City of Hammond” the official stated.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said he had “no comment” when asked via telephone about the investigation.
