Hammond Police state man accidentally shot friend, then shot himself
September 3, 2017-Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey has identified a 31 year old Highland man as the victim in a tragic incident that occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. in Hammond last night. According to the report, coroner investigators were called to 5454 Hohman Avenue (Franciscan St. Margaret Hospital) at 10:30 p.m. on September 2. Investigators pronounced 31 year old Jonathan Culp of the 7900 block of Glenwood St. in Highland dead at 11:10 p.m. A single gunshot wound was noted and the case is being investigated as a homicide according to the report.
According to Lt. Steven Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, Hammond Police were dispatched to the 7100 block of Osborn at approximately 9:30 p.m. in reference to a man who had been shot. Police later determined that victim was Jonathan Culp and that he had been accidentally shot by a 31 year old male from Hobart*. The Hobart man and other witnesses on scene attempted to administer CPR to Mr. Culp according to the report. An officer responded to the report of a gunshot victim heard a single shot as he approached the residence. According to the statement from Lt. Kellogg, the Hobart man told witnesses “that he could not live with what he had done and shot himself. The Hammond Fire Department transported Mr. Culp to St. Margaret’s hospital where he was later pronounced dead.The Hobart man died at the scene.”
