Hammond Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian-Vehicle Accident

September 2, 2017-According to a release from Lt. Steven Kellog Hammond Police are investigating after a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and a car. Lt. Kellogg stated “the Hammond Police Department responded to a pedestrian accident in the 4500 block of Calumet Avenue. A 2002 silver Buick was traveling northbound on Calumet Avenue near Gostlin Street when it struck a male who was traveling east crossing Calumet Avenue on foot.” Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey stated that coroner investigators were called to St. Margaret Hospital at 9:14 p.m. on September 1. Investigators pronounced 58 year old James Gavina of the 4500 blk of Oak Avenue in Hammond dead at 9:04 pm according to the report. Blunt force trauma resulting from a motor vehicle accident was noted in the report.

Hammond Police stated “tThe identity of the driver will be released upon formal charges as this case is still under
investigation.”
