August 8, 2017-Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. and the City of Hammond invite the public to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the $17 million Hammond Sportsplex and Community Center. The event will take place on Friday, Aug.
11 at 2 p.m. at the site of the former Woodmar Mall, 6630 Indianapolis Boulevard. The new, $17M facility, will feature six basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, two regulation-sized indoor soccer fields, six indoor batting cages and an upper level track that could be used for running and walking as well as for observation of
sporting events taking place on the lower level. The facility also will offer a community room to host city events, a concession area, general offices, and restrooms/changing rooms. The majority of the cost for the project will be paid for with federal funds.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., enthusiastically stated. “Typically our kids would have to travel outside of the area for basketball, volleyball and soccer tournaments,” stated Mayor McDermott. “This state of the art facility will allow us to have these tournaments in Hammond, bringing in visitors
who will be patronizing restaurants, hotels and other businesses in our City which could potentially bring in new economic development.”
