BREAKING: 17 Y.O. Female Shot at Columbia Center in Hammond

July 20, 2017-Hammond Police are on scene at this hour in the 7400 block of Chestnut Street. Police responded to the area reference a shooting incident involving a 17 year old female victim according to information derived from the scanner. On scene, a witness reported hearing ten shots. Officers had two units in the Columbia Center complex taped off and at least 3 markers which are normally used to indicate bullet casings could clearly be seen. One woman, visibly shaken, cried out “they shot her through the door.” EMS transported an individual to a local hosptial and neither the identity nor the condition of the victim is known at this time.

UPDATE: Hammond Police issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“On 7/19 at approximately 11:45 PM, Hammond police responded to a call of shots fired in the 7400 block of Chestnut Avenue located inside of the Saxony Townhomes. When police arrived they found a 17-year-old female with multiple gunshot wound’s inside of a residence. The female was pronounced dead at Community Hospital. We have no
additional information at this time but will keep everyone updated as the case unfolds. The investigation is on-going at this time and anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Shawn Ford at 219-852-2998.”
