Hammond Police Issue “Safety Alert” After Armed Robberies

Police issue alert after multiple armed robberies earlier today. “These subjects are to be considered armed and dangerous . . .Stay alert and stay safe by immediately calling 911 if any suspicious behavior is observed” Hammond Police Chief John Doughty

July 18, 2017-Hammond Police have issued a safety alert after multiple individuals were victims of armed robberies earlier today. According to Lt. Steven Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department,

“It started at approximately 6:20 am this morning when a 67-year-old Hispanic male called the police to report that his vehicle was stolen. The victim told police that he was sitting in his vehicle in the 5500 block of Alice Street when 4 young black males approached him holding baseball bats. He states they pulled him from his vehicle and stole it. The vehicle also contained personal belongings of the victim including a wallet and cell phone. The suspects were also believed to have been driving a stolen, white Town and Country van. The white in color Town and Country van has been located in East Chicago, IN. The suspects fled Alice Street in both vehicles. The victim’s vehicle is a 1999 grey in color Toyota Camry with Illinois plates ZX20185.”

Police say the suspects in that incident fled to Calumet City, IL where they are suspected of robbing a female at a Bank of America ATM. The woman in Calumet City was also threatened with a baseball bat. The ATM pictures are provided below.

The report continues:

Police believe that the suspects then drove to the Horseshoe Casino in the first victim’s vehicle (Toyota Camry) where they found another 67-year-old male from Illinois sitting in his vehicle. The victim stated that the males opened his car door and pulled him from his vehicle and started going through his pockets and assaulting him. He states that one of the suspects threatened to shoot him for not cooperating and displayed a black semi-automatic handgun in his waistband. The victim stated that he threw the money from his pocket in the air and fled the area.
The victim immediately contacted security and Hammond Police and when he returned noticed that his vehicle had been stolen with the keys inside. Attached is a video of this Robbery taking place.

This stolen vehicle is a 2014 black Hyundai Sonata with Illinois plates ZY44585. The suspects are also believed to have attempted to use stolen credit cards from one ofthe crimes at the Walmart located at 1100 5th Ave. in Hammond just after the Robbery at the casino. The attached picture shows two of the suspects inside of Walmart.

The males are believed to be young, black males approximately 5’08” possibly still wearing the clothing pictured. These suspects should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who can identify any of these suspects should contact Hammond Detective Sgt. John Suarez immediately at (219) 852-2981. Hammond Police Chief John Doughty would like to urge the public to “Stay alert and stay safe by immediately calling 911 if any suspicious behavior is observed.”


  1. SMH it’s a shame that they have to steal and even worse, so young. Young men why throw your life away for stealing someone else’s things. Also, remember dummies you used a weapon and hurt someone. That changed the crime. SMH where are their parents.

  2. Too bad the Lake County dispatch system delays, substantially delays police response.

    These young men are old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. Their luck their victims are not armed.
