1 Dead, Infant, Toddler and Mother Airlfited After Van and Semi Collide in Gary

July 5, 2017-Two children, who appeared to be under a year in age according to witnesses, were airlifted from Methodist Hospital to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago earlier this evening. A female from the same vehicle was also airlifted to a truama center and the male driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey issued a report confirming the death, but withheld the name of the decedant pending notification of next of kin. A teenager was also in the van and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance.
The condition of the teenage passenger is unknown at this time. The identities of those involved has not been released and Gary Police issued a simple statement acknowledging that Police responded to a fatal accident:

“On July , 2017 approximately 4:20 pm the Gary Police Department responded to a call
for service in the area of US20 and Clay Street regarding a vehicle crash with
injuries. Upon officers arrival it was discovered multiple people, including
children, were injured. One adult male was declared deceased one scene by the Lake
County Coroners Office.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting the reconstruction and the
Gary Police Department will handle all other investigative matters. Anyone with
further information is urged to contact Sergeant Michael Jackson at 219-881-7485.
The investigation is in it’s early stages and no further information will be
released at this time.”

Sources close to the investigation indicated that the collision involved a semi trailer carrying automobiles and a passenger van. The incident occurred on Route 20 in Gary’s Miller section.
