Portage Man Dies After Being Shot in Lake Station

Caller stated “someone just walked in and shot my brother”

July 3, 2017-A Lake Station man was pronounced dead earlier today after being shot inside his business. According to a release from Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey, coroner investigators were called to 2497 Ripley Street, Unit A in Lake Station at 3:05 p.m. today. The Gazette reported earlier that a man had been shot at that location. According to the report from Coroner Frey, 40 year old Joseph Martin of Portage succumbed to injuries received from multiple gunshot wounds. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:50 p.m. and the case is being classified as a homicide.

The incident occurred in a light industrial area behind Deja Vu. A source close to the investigation confirmed that Martin was shot 6 times. Lake Station Police were called to the area just before 2:00 p.m. today “in reference a gunshot victim” according to a statement from Captain Brian Williams. “Officers and paramedics arrived on scene and located the adult male victim already deceased. Witnesses on scene advised a blue Blazer (Pictured above) was observed fleeing the scene just after the incident occurred occupied by at least one male black subject.
