June 19, 2017-At approximately 9:30 p.m. Gary Police were called to the 4300 block of West 19th Avenue on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 9 year old male victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses reported that a white Pontiac Grand Am drove by firing at the home according to information obtained via the scanner. According to a witness on the scene, the victim was transported via ambulance.
A neighbor on the street described the neighborhood as “changing.” “We used to have streetlights out here” he said pointing upward. He described a regular routine of gunfire ringing out. “You will be out here and a car will drive by shooting and you have to grab your kids and run” the man stated. “Only God can help us now, the ministers need to get out here and go door” to door, ministering to these young people.”
This is a breaking report, we will update it when additional information is received. This was the second of two shootings involving children in Gary on the same day. See Two 9 Year Old Children Shot in Two Incidents in One Day in Gary
