Ruth A. Batey was charged with Theft, a level 5 felony
June 19, 2017-As previously reported by the Gazette, Gary Attorney Ruth A. Batey has been charged with felony theft. According to the Indiana State Police, she was taken into custody today and transported to the Lake County Jail. During the course of the arrest, police discovered that Batey also had a civil warrant out of Lake County. Batey is being held on a $20,000/$2,000 bond on the felony warrant and an additional $500 bond on the civil warrant according to the statement.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Batey represented Shane and robin Bolde who are both police officers in relation to a 2014 worker’s compensation claim. “On July 3, 2015, [Shane and Robin Bolde] discovered that Batey had sent an email to Beth Wilkinson who is a senior cliams representative for Farm Bureau Insurance and the email was in relation to the settlement draft check made payable to them and Batey in the amount of $80,000.00” the affidavit states. According to police, Batey deposit the $80,000.00 check into her attorney trust account. Police reviewed the records of the trust account and determined that “58 deposits were made from the [trust account] to Batey’s business account totalling $98,505.00 and 54 withdrawals were made from her business account totalling approximately $94,035.00.” Police go on to allege that Batey never prepared a settlement statement nor issued a check to Shane and Robin Bolde. Batey was charged with theft, a level 5 felony. The case is being investigated by Detective Gary Runde of the Indiana State Police.
