“Without [Capitol Hill Police] nobody would have survived”-Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky
June 14, 2017-A 66 year old Bernie Sanders campaign worker from Illinois is reportedly dead after shooting at least one congressman, two police officers and two congressional staff members. The shooter has been identified as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. According to a tweet from President Trump, Hodgkinson died as a result of return fire from Capitol Hill Police.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein issued the following statement on behalf of the United States Department of Justice:
“This morning, Members of Congress, Senators, congressional staffers, and Capitol Police officers were targets of a senseless and cowardly attack during a practice for a bi-partisan, charity baseball game. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We pray for their swift recovery. The Department of Justice will provide all resources necessary for a thorough investigation.”
Senator Bernie Sanders said he was “sickened” by the “despicable” act:
I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign. I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values.
“My hopes and prayers are that Representative Scalise, congressional staff and the Capitol Police Officers who were wounded make a quick and full recovery. I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm.”
Senator Rand Paul provided a detailed, eye-witness account of the events to Fox News. You can view that video below.Click here for reuse options!
