UPDATE: Father in Custody After 9 Year Old Shot to Death in Hobart

Father of 9 year old Olivia Hummel is in custody; Police say the investigation is ongoing

June 11, 2017-According to Lt. James Gonzales of the Hobart Police Department, the father of 9 year old Olivia Hummel is currently being housed a the Lake County Jail pending a full investigation into the child’s death. Lt. Gonzales says Hobart Police were called to the 100 block of E. 10th Avenue at approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 10 “in reference to a nine-year-old female that had been shot.” The first officer on scene saw the female and a male lying on the bedroom floor and began to perform CPR on the unresponsive juvenile. Hobart Fire Department arrived and transported the female to a local hospital according to the statement. 9 year old Olivia Hummel succumbed to injuries from the single gunshot and was pronounced dead by Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey at 5:25 p.m. on June 10, 2017.

Police say that the male who was present identified himself as the father of Olivia Hummel. His name has not been released, but police say he was taken into custody for questioning. The man requested a lawyer and is currently being housed at the Lake County Jail according to Police. Police spoke with two juvenile males on scene and they stated “their father had been showing them a firearm and firearm discharged” according to Lt. Gonzales. The two juvenile males were in the room when the fatal shooting occurred.

Lt. Gonzales says the investigation is ongoing and they expect to present charges to Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter on Monday June 12, 2017.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. A criminal charge is not evidence of guilt.
