June 11, 2017-Hammond Police say a 19 year old resident is in custody after an argument turned deadly Saturday Afternoon. According to Lt. Steven Kellogg, Hammond Police were called to an apartment in the 6000 block of Hohman at approximately 1:40 a.m.* on Saturday in reference to a stabbing. “Upon arrival officers encountered several people standing around Mr. Xavier Curtis age 50 who is on the ground bleeding” according to the report. Mr. Curtis was transported to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond.
Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey says that Coroner Investigators were called to St. Margaret Hospital at 2:45 a.m. on Saturday May 10, 2017. 50 year old Xavier Curtis of Hammond was pronounced dead. Stab wounds were noted and the case is being investigated as a homicide according to Coroner Frey.
Lt, Kellogg says an arrest was made in the case. “The victim and the suspect are known to each other and incident took place because of an argument over moving out of the apartment and getting a job” Lt. Kellogg stated. Leterr Levert Petty age 19 from Hammond was arrested and charged with
murder, manslaughter, battery by means of a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery.
All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. A criminal charge is not evidence of guilt.
