May 24, 2017-Mayor McDermott will address police officers tonight at the Hammond FOP #51 annual memorial service. The service will honor fallen local and state police officers and their families according to a statement from the Fraternal Order of Police. “This is an opportunity for our local/state police officers, survivors of fallen officers, family, friends, officials, media, and community members to take part in prayer and reflection regarding fallen Hammond Police Officers killed in the line of duty throughout history, and officers nationwide who lose their lives daily as a result of their bravery and service to their respective communities. The inherent risk that officers experience by pinning a badge onto their chest is something infrequently understood outside of the law enforcement community. The memories of our fallen brothers and sisters continue to live on in our hearts each time we head out into our respective communities to do the job that they once did; their spirits are with us during every shift.”
The service is planned to take place on the front (south) lawn of the Hammond Police Department, 509 Douglas St., Hammond. There, it will take place between the main doors of the Hammond police station and the FOP #51 memorial that reflects upon the HammondPolice Officers killed in the line of duty. In case of inclement weather, the alternate location for our service will be just down the street at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Avenue, Hammond. The service begins promptly at 5:30 p.m and the public is encouraged to attend. Those who cannot attend may view the event at gohammond.tvClick here for reuse options!
