One Dead After Officer Involved Shooting in Portage

April 22, 2017-A traffic stop in Portage today led to an officer firing his service revolver and killing a man according to a statement from Portage Police Chief Troy Williams. Few details are available as the case is now being investigated by the Porter County Sheriff’s Department. According to the statement from Chief Williams, “n April 22nd, 2017 at approximately 1:47 a.m. an Officer from the Portage Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 5300 block of Royal Avenue. During the encounter initial reports indicate actions by the suspect ultimately led to the officer involved shooting.”

Porter County Sheriff’s Department released acknowledging that they are investigating. The victim was identified as 39 year old William D. Spates of Portage, Indiana. According to the statement from the Sheriff, the officer involved in the incident was taken to a local hospital and was “checked out and released.” Neither the officers identity nor a description of the officer’s injuries were provided at this time.

Additional details regarding the incident are expected on Monday April 24.
