S. Bend Man Charged After Fatal OWI Crash in Hammond

April 10, 2017-According to a release from Lt. Steven Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, a South Bend man is charged with operating while intoxicated causing death after an accident in which one woman died and three others were hospitalized. The incident occurred on Saturday April 8, 2017 at approximately 11:30 pm in the 3300 block of Michigan Street. “Denver Brown age 69 of South Bend was traveling east when his vehicle crossed the center lane and struck another passenger vehicle traveling west. The struck vehicle was occupied by Maria C. Gonzalez age
55, two juvenile females, and one 19-year-old female” the report states. Ms. Gonzalez, of the 5500 block of Homerlee Avenue, East Chicago, was pronounced at the scene according to a release from Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey. The three passengers in Ms. Gonzalez’ car are in stable condition according to Lt. Kellogg.

Brown received minor injuries and was arrested and charged with one count of operating while intoxicated causing death and three counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury.
