March 17, 2017-The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Kankakee Township Fire Department and LaPorte County EMS responded to the US 20 at CR 300 E at approximately 7:00 a.m. today for a report of an accident with injuries. According to the report, “First responding units found that the crash involved a passenger car and a semi tractor-trailer. The three occupants of the passenger car were killed in the crash; the driver of the semi was not injured.”
The report continues “Preliminary information indicated that the passenger vehicle was traveling west on US 20 and the semi tractor-trailer was traveling east. At the time of the crash the weather in the area was poor with freezing rain, sleet and temperatures near freezing. The investigation is underway and as of the time of this new release, no determinations have been made as to the cause of the crash or who may have been at fault. The La Porte County Coroner is working to identify the victims of this crash and ensure that the families are notified.
This is the second triple fatal crash on US 20 in as many months. Exactly two months to the day, on January 17, 2017, three people were killed less than three miles west of today’s crash. That triple fatality was on the heels of a double fatal that occurred late in the evening of January 16th; that crash was also on US 20.” A press conference is scheduled for later today and additional details are expected at that time.
