March 3, 2017-On March 1, 2017, Gary Police reported that an elderly woman was found dead in her home after a welfare check. According to Lt Dawn Westerfield of the Gary Police Department, officers were asked to do a welfare check on an elderly female in the 500 block of Kentucky Street at approximately at approximately 3:24 p.m. After not getting a response from anyone inside, Gary Fire Department assisted police in gaining entrance into the residence according to the report. Once inside a female was found unresponsive inside the residence. The woman was identified as 69 year old Annie Nelson by Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey. Coroner Frey’s initial report noted blunt force trauma.
Police have now filed murder charges against Annie Nelson’s son. According to Lt. Westerfield, Detective Alexander Jones secured charges today against Joseph Nelson, 32 of Gary. The report identifies Joseph Nelson as the son of Annie Nelson. Police say that Joseph Nelson attacked his mother in her home on March 1, 2017. Joseph Nelson is currently in custody and charged with Murder.
