BREAKING: Retired Gary Police Captain Shot in His Home

Captain Austin made national news in the “Demon House” case.

February 22, 2017-The Northwest Indiana Gazette has confirmed that retired Gary Police Captain Charles Austin was shot in his home just before midnight on February 21, 2017. According to information derived from the scanner and confirmed through sources, a single subject attempted to break into Captain Austin’s home. Captain Austin was shot in the abdomen and transported to a local trauma center. Captain Austin returned fire, striking the suspect in the wrist. Gary Police were assisted by Lake County Sheriff’s Police as well as Indiana State Police in the investigation which resulted in several arrests.

UPDATE: Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield released the following statement in response to our request for information: “retired Gary Police Captain Austin was injured during a home invasion. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Jon Basaldua at 219-881-1210 or the Crime Tip Line at 866-CRIME-GP. Nothing further is available at this time. Updates will be sent when further information is gained. Meanwhile, a source close the investigation tells the Gazette that two arrests were made as a result of the shooting.
