Violence Continues in Hammond as Woman Shot Dead in Her Home

January 27, 2017-A week of unrelated incidents of violence continues in Hammond as a 21 year old woman was shot dead in her home early this morning.  Officers were summoned to the 900 block of Becker Street just after 1:00 am this morning according to a statement from Lt. Richard Hoyda.  Upon arrival, officers located a 21 year old shooting victim according to the statement.  Emergency medical assistance was summoned, but “the victim has since passed away” according to the statement. A coroner report has not yet been released and the identity of the victim is unknown at this time.

Officers quickly identified a suspect whom they say “had a prior relationship with the victim.”  The suspect was later taken into custody in Chicago, IL according to an update from Lt. Hoyda.

Earlier in the week a domestic incident in the 1300 block of Truman Street resulted in the death of Carmelle Erbie Cajuste of that address.  Two others were shot in that incident which police are describing as a domestic incident in a probably cause affidavit.  Joseph Barner has been charged as a result of that incident.  On Wednesday, another shooting in the Hessville section of Hammond was believed to be committed by someone known to the victim.  That victim was transported to a local hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.
