Suspected Killer in Custody

January 23, 2017-Hammond Police have confirmed that suspected murderer Joseph E. Barner has been taken into custody by Lynwood, IL police. Lynwood Police held a press conference announcing the arrest moments ago. According to Lynwood Police Deputy Chief Terrence Schubert they received a tip that Barner was on his way to his mother’s home in Lynwood. According to the Deputy Chief Schubert, “Barner’s family pastor and his Mother convinced Barner to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident.” A weapon, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered in the home. Police did not have information regarding a motive according to Deputy Chief Schubert.

The incident began when Hammond police were called to the 1300 block of Truman Street early this morning. According to Lt. Richard Hoyda, Hammond Police were called to the 1300 block of Truman Street at 6:07 a.m. “It is believed that a female who was inside the residence at the time of the shooting called for police” according to Lt. Hoyda. Upon arrival, police found that three individuals had suffered gunshot wounds. Hammond Police then quickly developed a suspect profile and issued a press release including a photo of Barner. Police say they located Barner’s vehicle just blocks from the scene. Officers then went door to door in the neighborhood looking for Barner. Numerous tips could be heard over the scanner as residents were on high alert.

Police have not yet released details on the shooting, but sources confirm that the matter is believed to be an incident of domestic violence.

All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Identification as a suspect is not a criminal charge and is not evidence of guilt of the suspect.
