1 Dead, 2 Critical After Shooting in Hammond Home

January 23, 2017-Hammond Police are investigating after a triple shooting left one dead and two critical. According to Lt. Richard Hoyda, Hammond Police were called to the 1300 block of Truman Street at 6:07 a.m. “It is believed that a female who was inside the residence at the time of the shooting called for police” according to Lt. Hoyda. Upon arrival, police found that three individuals had suffered gunshot wounds according to the report:

#1: Female believed to be in her 30’s shot in the head and deceased at the scene;
#2: Female age 36 shot in the head and now being transferred to a local trauma
hospital;
#3: Male age 27 shot in the neck and now being transferred to a local trauma
hospital. This victim was a listed resident of the home where the shooting took
place.

The latest medical information on the two surviving shooting victims is critical.

The only suspect information at this time is that a male may have been involved and
that the shooting took place at or near the front entrance door of the residence in
question. Police are on scene at this time and are still investigating the incident. We will update you as additional information becomes available.

UPDATE: Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey has identified the deceased as 44 year old Carmelle Erbie Cajuste. According to the report, Carmelle was a resident of the Truman Street home where the shooting occurred. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:50 a.m. according to the report. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds and the case is being investigated as a homicide.
